failure-to-file penalty
Definition
Paid to the IRS by individuals who do not file their tax return before the due date. The failure-to-file penalty is calculated from the tax filing due date through the date you filed the return, with a 5% penalty imposed for each month the return is late. The maximum penalty is 25%.
