Definition 1
Unit of purity of a precious metal, measured in one-thousandths. A piece of gold marked '999 fine' indicates that it contains only 0.1 percent of other metal(s).
Definition 2
Relative measure of fiber size. For manufactured fibers it is expressed in denier or tes; for cotton, the mean fiber weight in micrograms per inch; for wool, the mean fiber width (diameter) in microns.
