1.Unit of purity of a precious metal, measured in one-thousandths. A piece of gold marked '999 fine' indicates that it contains only 0.1 percent of other metal(s).
2.Relative measure of fiber size. For manufactured fibers it is expressed in denier or tes; for cotton, the mean fiber weight in micrograms per inch; for wool, the mean fiber width (diameter) in microns.
