fire aisle
Definition
A passageway or area that must be cleared of any obstructions so that employees can quickly evacuate in the event of a fire or other emergency. It also provides access for firefighters and equipment to gain speedy access and control the spread of flames. The number, width, and location of such aisles is often regulated by local building regulations and may need to comply with state and federal safety codes as well. Also called fire lanes.
