firmware
Definition
Software or instruction set (such as the Basic Input Output System or BIOS of a PC) stored in the 'read-only' (non-volatile) part of a computer's silicon (solid state) memory because it is rarely (if ever) changed, and does not vanish when the computer is switched off. See also flash memory.
