fixed-position scanner
Definition
A type of barcode scanner that is stationary. The optics on these scanners tend to be omni or multidirectional over a limited range of distance. As units move within optical range, the information on the barcode is read so that a central computer can document and track moving inventory or point of sale information. These scanners are quite common in packaging, delivery, warehousing, and certain retail businesses, such as grocery stores.
