flea market
Definition
Outdoor market utilized by vendors to exchange discounted new or used merchandise for money. Flea markets are usually operated in an outdoor facility and may charge shoppers a minimal fee to enter the premises. The name is said to have derived from a French term in 1920, and may have suggested that some of the second-hand clothing or other goods sold at flea markets might have been infested with fleas.
