Visible or invisible (1) vapors given off by inorganic or organic liquids, (2) mixed gases resulting from incomplete combustion such as in a gasoline engine, (3) one or more gases produced by a chemical reaction, (4) sub-microscopic particulate-matter emitted by heated metals or metallic compounds. See also smoke.
