funnel experiment

Definition

Quality control experiment in which marbles are dropped from a funnel in an attempt to hit a mark on a smooth, flat surface below it. This experiment demonstrates that a system (any system) is improved by reducing variation and not by over control or tampering, and that variation reduction calls for system changes which only the management can bring about.
