genuine progress indicator (GPI)
Definition
A method developed in the mid nineties for measuring economic progress. This metric takes the GDP as a starting point but factors in the social and environmental results of business and financial activities that may cancel out some of the beneficial effects of increased domestic production. This model attempts to define a nation's genuine overall economic and social wellbeing in terms of sustainable progress.
