hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCF)
Definition
Chemicals manufactured from hydrocarbons, and containing chlorine and fluorine in addition to carbon and hydrogen. HCF are used as replacement for chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) because of their lower ozone depletion potential (ODP) and environmental pollution potential. However, they contribute to global warming through the buildup of greenhouse gases (see greenhouse effect).
