inhibitor

Definition

Chemical or substance added or applied to another substance, to slowdown a reaction or to prevent an unwanted chemical change. For example, anti-oxidants are added as inhibitors to food to retard its spoilage from exposure to air (oxygen). Similarly, protective coatings inhibit the corrosion of metals by preventing their contact with the air and/or water. An inhibitor is an opposite of a catalyst.
