lossy compression
Definition
Data-file reduction technique in which the compression algorithm causes loss of a certain percentage of original data (which may not be obvious to the user) during compression-decompression process. Commonly used in compression of music and photographs, it provides very high compression ratios but the decompressed file is not identical to the original file.
