Definition
Local judicial officer, sitting in a magistrate's court. Though magistrates may or may not have any formal legal qualification, they generally can hear criminal and some civil cases and commit offenders for trial by a judge and jury. Their decisions (unlike those of the judges) do not set precedents for other courts to follow.
