Definition

Fee charged by a merchant account provider for credit card transactions where the actual card is not available to the merchant, such as in mailed, phoned-in, or via Internet orders. MOTO discount rates are higher than discount rates for transactions conducted with a card-swipe machine (magnetic-stripe reader) due to the increased risk of fraud or non-payment.
