markup language
Definition
Specialized computer language employed in wrapping (encapsulating) and describing data and its attributes. A markup language embeds processing instructions (called tags) in electronic documents so that they are accurately styled and presented as the original document irrespective of the computer platform, operating system, or application-program used. They also allow inclusion of additional descriptive information (called metadata) about the encapsulated data to facilitate exchange of complex data types between different systems. See also Extensible Markup Language (XML), Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).
