master servant rule

Definition

Agency law rule of vicarious-liability under which a principal (or an employer) is responsible for the negligent acts of the agent (or employee). The principal is responsible even when the specific acts of the agent were unknown to him or her when they were committed. It's the principal's duty to supervise the agent's actions and set standards and limits on them. See also duties of agent and principal.
