Definition

Sum of chemical and physical processes that are continually occurring within a living organism and which are essential to life and well being. Metabolism employs various enzymes to breakdown complex substances (such as food constituents) into simpler ones (a process called catabolism), and to build them back into different complex substances (a process called anabolism), release energy, eliminate wastes, and thus enable the organism's growth and continued functioning.
