Definition
The control over the amount of liquid currency circulated, whether in the hands of the public or in banks or banking reserves, including the Federal Reserve Banks. When the Federal Reserve Bank prints more money, financial institutions can expand their own assets well beyond what is necessary for them to operate, causing inflation opposite of controlling the monetary base.
