multicast backbone (Mbone)
Definition
Virtual network of internet sub-networks and routers designed to carry multimedia transmission for audio/video conferencing and other heavy data traffic (such as weather satellite images). While most internet traffic is unicast (see Unicasting) where one user connects to one source at a time, Mbone allows simultaneous transmission to multiple addresses.
