nitrogen (N)

Definition

Colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and inert gas which forms about 78 percent of the Earth's atmosphere by volume and about 77 percent by weight, and it maintained at this level by the nitrogen cycle. It is an essential component of the tissue (as amino acids and nucleic acids) of all animals and plants which derive it from the soil, fertilizers, or through the nitrogen cycle. For industrial uses nitrogen is obtained from the liquefaction and fractional distillation of air, mainly for manufacturing ammonia, dyes, explosives, and fertilizers.
