It is an essential component of the tissue (as amino acids and nucleic acids) of all animals and plants which derive it from the soil, fertilizers, or through the nitrogen cycle. For industrial uses nitrogen is obtained from the liquefaction and fractional distillation of air, mainly for manufacturing ammonia, dyes, explosives, and fertilizers.
