opinion poll
Definition
Marketing research technique applied to canvassing public opinion on specific political, social, or other issues. Frequently used in forecasting election results, opinion pollsters take survey of the views of randomly chosen samples of the population and draw statistical results. Also called Gallup poll after one of its early practitioners, George Gallup. The science of opinion sampling is called psephology.
