Definition
Number of ordinary shares (common stock) that, after their issue, have been sold to and are being held by shareholders (stockholders). Computation of dividend, and the market capitalization of a publicly traded firm, are based on the number of outstanding shares. In a balance sheet they are shown under the heading issued share capital (in the UK) or capital stock issued & outstanding (in the US).
