Definition
The number of ordinary shares that, after their issue, have been sold to and are being held by shareholders.
Computation of dividend, and the market capitalization of a publicly traded company, are based on the number of outstanding shares. In a balance sheet they are shown under the heading issued share capital (in the UK) or capital stock issued & outstanding (in the US). Also called shares outstanding, outstanding stock.
