pardon
Definition
Government's decision to free a convict serving his or her term in a prison by absolving him or her of the conviction as if it never occurred. It is usually granted by the head of state on the advice of panel (often called 'mercy committee') generally on the basis of extenuating circumstances such as the convict's age, family situation, and good behavior.
