passivation
Definition
Rendering a substance inactive or inert by chemical action. Aluminum, for example, is passivated when it reacts with the air to form a protective layer of aluminum oxide which prevents further air-aluminum reaction. Similarly, iron is passivated when it reacts with nitric acid to form a layer of iron oxide.
