Definition
Organic compounds (acidic alcohols derived from benzene) released in environment as byproducts of petroleum refining, resin manufacturing, tanning, textile dyeing, etc. In low concentrations in water, phenols cause irritation, odor, and taste problems, and are very toxic in higher concentrations.
