plug and play (PnP)

Definition

Personal computer architecture that can identify devices 'plugged-in' inside or outside of a computer, and can use them for their designed purpose. PnP devices (such as graphics cards, monitors, fixed or removable drives, printers, scanners, speakers, etc.) contain identifying information that can be read by the computer's BIOS (called PnP BIOS) and the operating system. Every time a new device is added, the computer reads its information and configures itself accordingly, usually without any user intervention.
