point to point protocol (PPP)

Definition

Serial 8-bit connection standard which has largely replaced serial line internet protocol (SLIP) as the most popular method of making dial-up connection to internet or other networks over ordinary telephone lines. PPP emulates (see emulation) other major protocols (such as TCP/IP), provides error detection and correction, online security, superior data negotiation and compression, and router-to-router and host-to-network connections, over both asynchronous and synchronous circuits.
