Pokémon is a media franchise
that was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. The franchise is owned by The Pokémon Company
and started with two role-playing video
games for the original
Boy. Since then, the franchise has expanded to include trading cards, TV shows and movies, toys, comic books
, apps and video games. In July 2016, the franchise released Pokémon Go, an augmented reality mobile
by Niantic, that immediately exploded in popularity with people of all ages. The explosive
growth caused a near immediate rise in Nintendo's stock
price of over 70%.
Similar to the other franchise games, the objective
is to catch the fictional Pokémon characters and battle other players. Throughout its lifetime, the franchise has experienced continued success
with handheld games and has become one of the most successful and lucrative video-game franchises in the world.
