polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)

Definition

Group of compounds derived from the solid aromatic-hydrocarbon anthracene (C14H10) composed of three fused benzene rings, and used mainly in the manufacture of dyes. Several members of this group are known or suspected carcinogens, and seem to be related to the cancer causing properties of tobacco smoke.
