public accounts committee (PAC)
Definition
Powerful parliamentary committee set up to examine reports from the Auditor General (or the National Audit Office), and to investigate if the money allocated by the parliament to various government agencies is spent as parliament intended. A PAC comprises of a certain number (15 in the UK) of the members of parliament headed by a member of the opposition, and its hearings are generally held in public.
