raster image processor (RIP)
Definition
Device that translates PostScript and other page-description language commands (vector data) into pixels or dots (bitmap data) for printing by a dot matrix, inkjet, or laser printer, or by an imagesetter. A hardware-software device, it sits between a computer and a printer.
