read only memory (ROM)
Definition
Specifically: Memory chips that come with instructions or data (such as Basic Input Output System or BIOS) programmed into them, normally not erasable by the user, and not lost when power is switched off. In General: Storage media such as CDs and DVDs which come loaded with pre-recorded data and cannot be used to record new data.
