real estate investment trust (REIT)
Definition
Investment vehicle similar to a mutual fund (unit trust). REITs use the pooled capital of several investors to make mortgage loans to builders or developers, or to directly invest in income-producing property that offers tax benefits in addition to interest and capital gains. Also called mortgage REIT.
