right of silence
Definition
Right afforded to a person accused of a criminal offense against self-incrimination, and to protect himself or herself from abuse of power by those investigating the crime. Once considered a fundamental right, it has been curtailed in the recent times, such as by the UK's 'Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, 1994.' Not be confused with the right to presumption of innocence.
