root mean square (RMS)
Definition
Mathematical value computed by taking the square root of the average (mean) of the squares of a set of randomly varying quantities observed at regular intervals during a cycle, such as the alternating current (AC) or the 'noise' in a communication channel. For many purposes, RMS value is the best measure of the effective or typical value of the phenomenon being observed.
