Definition
Type of gastroenteritis caused by the infestation of the digestive tract by s. enteritidis (a strain of salmonella bacteria) ingested with contaminated food, typically eggs, fish, and poultry. After an incubation period of 6 to 48 hours, its general symptoms include sudden abdominal pain, bloody watery diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. It may be fatal in the very young, infirm, and the elderly.
