Definition
Portion of free space on a hard disk used in image editing programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) to temporarily store graphic files too big to be handled by the computer's random access memory. As a rule of thumb, five times the size of the image file being edited is required as scratch disk space (that becomes free when editing is completed or abandoned).
