1. General: Distinct and large subdivision defined on the basis of some common factor. See also segment.
2. Data storage: Smallest addressable division of a storage area on a magnetic disk, created when a disk is formatted. The operating system of a computer breaks data into sector size chunks and stores it in the free (unoccupied) sectors which may be together (contiguous) or separated.
