secure socket layer (SSL)
Definition
Non-proprietary (open) world-wide standard for authentication, data encryption-decryption, and privacy over a network such as internet. Developed by Netscape, and based on RSA method, it is application-independent and allows other security protocols (such as HTTP, set, and Telnet) to be layered over it. Although not entirely foolproof, SSL provides a high level of data integrity and security by encrypting the entire data stream and by sending it over a secure channel.
