Definition
Formal, printed list of freight charges, method of their computation, and applicable regulations or terms. It often includes: (1) Alternative tariff: two or more freight rates to and from the same points and on the same type of cargo. (2) Class tariff: freight rate applicable to a particular classification of cargo such as dangerous or flammable goods. (3) Commodity tariff: freight rate applicable only to bulk commodities such as grain, lumber, metals, ores. Also called shipping tariff, or just tariff.
