short squeeze

Definition

Short-seller's pain (loss) resulting from a sharp, unexpected rise in the price of the item that was sold short (see short sale). Short sellers who scamper to buy the item to cover their short positions push the price of the item even higher resulting in heavier losses for the slow reacting short sellers. See also long squeeze.
