sick building syndrome

Definition

Acute ill-health and discomfort effects linked to time spent in certain (usually new) buildings, often without any identifiable sickness or cause. Some common culprits are volatile organic compounds (VOCS) and substances such as formaldehyde and polyvinyl chloride used in adhesives, carpets, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, plumbing, wall papers, wiring.
