simple network management protocol (SNMP)

Definition

Set of standards originally intended to enable networking devices and peripherals from different vendors to work together. SNMP is now a part of TCP/IP suite of protocols, works over the internet, and can be used to manage virtually any device such as printers, switches, and wiring hubs. Its improved version (called remote network monitoring specification or RNMS) allows error alerts to be sent to network administrators.
