snake oil
Definition
A concoction that uses exotic ingredients to form a homemade remedy for certain illnesses. These mixtures are thought to be useless by the medical community and often result in no physical improvement, but have caused individuals to "believe" they have been healed. "The gypsy gave the ailing man some snake oil that would supposedly heal his terminal cancer."
