Genus of gram-positive, non-spore forming grape shaped bacteria, some species of which produce a heat resistant toxin. Staphylococci cause food poisoning and systemic infections leading to meningitis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, and several other serious diseases, sometimes in hospitals.
