strict joint and several liability

Definition

US term for the liability for cleanup of hazardous wastes. Here 'strict' means that wrongdoers are liable whether or not they acted carelessly or unreasonably; 'joint and several' means that any and all of the wrongdoers can be forced to pay for all the damages in case of an indivisible harm (where the proportion of total harm attributable to each wrongdoer cannot be determined).
