Definition
Court order directing a witness to appear in the court on a certain day, to give evidence or produce specified documents required as evidence. Failure to comply with a subpoena without due cause is considered contempt of court, and is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment. Subpoena is Latin for under a penalty.
