suppression of evidence

Definition 1

Concealment, destruction or withholding of, or refusal to give, material evidence which one has or knows and is legally or morally bound to reveal. It is normally considered 'obstruction of justice,' a criminal offense.

Definition 2

Court ruling that a particular evidence be excluded from a trial because it was illegally obtained. See also suppression of documents.
