Definition

Chemical treatment process in which the soft and perishable proteins of animal hides or skins are converted into durable and flexible leather. In vegetable tanning, the active agent is tannic acid derived from the bark of certain trees. In chrome tanning, salts of metals such as aluminum, chromium, and zirconium are used. Also called curing.
