target organ toxin

Definition

Substance that (in contrast to a systemic toxin) generally does not affect the entire body, but instead attacks a particular organ or body system. For example, neurotoxins (such as carbon disulfide) attack the nervous system, and carbon monoxide attacks the hematopoletic system to deprive the body tissue of oxygen.
